He was a detective on a radio program in the 40s or there abouts. He would narrate the action then the other actors would do their part. So with that information here's the joke.

There was a knock on the door.
I walked over to the door and opened it.
There was a beautiful blonde standing there with a pair of 38s pointing right at me.
She also had a gun.

I was one of those who sat in the living room in the evening around the radio, listening.
I do remember the deep voice of Sam Spade.

And Sgt Preston, Jack Benny, Roy Rodgers, Sky King, Lucy, The Shadow, and others.

It was a time when your family sat together quietly, your imagination forming the scene as it was described. Can you imagine that happening today, with every one's thumbs hammering away.

Pretty much. You forgot Big John and Sparky on Saturday mornings. And the Green Hornet.

Satellite radio has a channel called Classic Radio. All of those old programs and more are on it 24/7.

I would love it, except the only satellite radio I have is in my car, and that's as bad as texting. I lose driving concentration, listening to a story, or audio books.

We have them in both vehicles. Have lifetime membership on them. When satellite radio first came out a lifetime membership was only about a couple of hundred dollars, it's outrageous now. We had it in our 12 year old car and when the car died it was only $75 to transfer it over to the newer used vehicle that we bought.
I listened to Y2K country in my truck.
Have to listen to the 60s station in wife's car. LOL.
In the house we have one with the home base.
I went to a garage sale and bought it. Funny story, the person that I bought it from was joining a religious cult and was getting rid of everything he had and was giving the money to the cult. I didn't know it at the time but he had a lifetime membership on it. I've had the radio for over 10 years now and it's still going strong.

I wonder if the same can be said for the cultist? Sometimes they take of for comets on rocket ships. Nobody mentioned Gunsmoke - that's the one I remember. And my mom listening to soaps during the day - Helen Trent?

Where you in San Diego when all of the people in a cult in Rancho Santa Fe committed suicide when the comet was flying overhead.
They all drank poison. To be taken to the comet after they died.

Gunsmoke is there along with Have Gun Will Travel.

Those were very good years. I'm surprised that the memory recall is so vivid.
