Hi I'm new to the group and fishing. I love going fishing but I have not been very successful. My favorite fishing spot is on Pelican Island in Galveston. I have pier or shore options. I would love to hear any recommendations on bait, lures, jigs, ect to improve my success fishing. 🙂

Hello Jenny: Yes, I know Pelican Island. I've fished around it by wading on the north side, and in a boat in the ship channel. Never had much luck except for grandkids fishing for pinfish in the Galveston Ship channel near the bulkhead on the south side of Pelican. I think you would do best with live shrimp, and if you cannot find that, use dead, or even frozen shrimp. I started by wade fishing at the Texas City dike, but then got tired of getting back into a new car all wet and muddy, so I bought a bay boat and mostly fished West Bay, although I also caught fish in Trinity Bay, and the main channel. In the heat of summer there are giant red fish around the production platforms in the middle of Galveston Bay. If you are just beginning, I would stick with a popping cork and live bait. If you are up to wade fishing, go and try Boliver Pocket in the spring, say April and May. You can wade quite a distance out and not be more than waist deep. Fish a top water lure, say a Heddon spook, almost any color will do. Always scoot your feet, never pick them up due to sting rays! I have limited out on trout there more than once! Good Luck! RJS

Hey RJS ...will the water quality melt waders there in Galveston? I got on a Cruise ship in Galveston. It didn't seem like very clean water. Are the fish safe to eat?

Welcome to the Forum Jenny

Jenny: First answer: I don't know! But I have never heard about water quality causing any problems in either affecting waders, or the fish. What you saw in the cruise ship dock would not be the same as out in more open water, or even in the Gulf. Most people eat the fish they catch or simply release them if not planning on eating them. I expect you would only wear waders in winter. By April and May, wear tennis and long pants in the Gulf because there might be a chance of encountering a stray jelly fish and get stung. You need to get a chart of the Galveston bay system to see how to find different locations, like how to access the Boliver pocket! Tight Lines, RJS

Hello my name is Jon Maly. I am your new friend! I have been looking for someone to fish with on Pelican Island! I have been fishing Seawolf Park on the weekends. I have been looking for a friend to fish with!, trade fishing secrets and tell stories with. I have been catching lots and lots of sand trout and porgies through flounder season. I also fish Galveston Jetties, Freeport Jetties, and also fish Galveston party boats twice a month. You need to private message me and I will let you in on the scoop. And of course you can tell me your secrets 4 Fishing the area. I invested in a shrimp bucket with two air pumps and that's generally what I fish with his live shrimp. You have the chance of catching anything. Including those big Reds and trout.
