Hey all! I am in need of some wisdom. I live in a small town in Ohio and just got the town to approve my idea to start a local fishing club for youth and teens. I want to encourage them to put down the controller's and screens and get outside and fish. I have a pretty good group of youth on board so far with about 30 kids. The problem I am running into the lack of tackle and rods these future anglers will need to enjoy their experience. I have already looked into online garage sales an my nearest mom and pop tackle shop is a bass pro shop and hour drive from my house. The town likes my idea but won't provide any funding for me to even buy the basics. Any ideas on how to get some lures, baits and rods so that everyone can enjoy their time out on the water? Any idea you can provide will be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

I applaud you in wanting to do something to get the youth movement off the couch and outside in the fresh air.Maybe try to get in contact with some tackle manufacturers....look on the packaging on lures or the like for a phone number or website. If you do get in touch, then simply state your business..Heres hoping someone will listen and help you out with that.Im sure it'll have to go thru some political connections along the way. Good luck!

Contact the Bass Pro shop and see if they are willing to donate to your cause. They may be able to provide gear at little or no cost and may be willing to provide some manpower to assist or teach.

And maybe put an ad on Craig's List or some such site.

I am not even going to get into the politics here. Do you have a Cabela’s or Bass Pro shop near you? I will donate some on my points for a gift card to get some stuff for the kids.

Put an article in your local newspaper and your needs for the project.

These are all great ideas!

Phil - thank you for the encouragement and I will definitely look on the packaging of some of my lures to see if I can get contact info.

GLA- I didn't know bass pro shop would possibly offer something like that and will most definitely look into it further ( even if it's for manpower or teaching)

BILLBYRD1- I love that idea! The only problem is our local newspaper is going out of business and I don't know who is going to take over the new online news stuff but I will definitely have to contact them.

Thank you all so much for the start, I just want the kids to enjoy the experience we all do when we get out to our favorite honey holes and catch fish. Mabey even show one of them that yes tv and video games are fun, but they don't give you the same excitement as fighting to land that 5 LB bass or whatever it is at the end of the hook.

Mornin' Aaron, Thanks for putting your location on your profile page. I was a phy. ed. teacher and I taught a fishing class to jr. high students, lifetime sports, and I contacted Berkley, Shakespeare, and many other tackle/rod/reel manufactures and they sent me all kinds of stuff. Most of it was seconds, but it worked just fine. This was in the late '70s and early '80s. I typed a letter on school stationery and had the stuff sent to the school. The kids really enjoyed it and we had some Sat. field days. It was a co-ed class and fishing wasn't a girly thing to do back then. Good Luck!

Aaron another idea is to have the kids and parents have a car wash, a bake sale a garage sale or things like this. Let them earn their own equipment. It will make them appreciate it more. That being said, if I can find your address I'd be glad to throw in some thing for the kids also.

We got the state to help out with rods and reels for our clubs kids program. Contact your state agency and ask about fishing clinics and other programs for kids! Three years FWC came out and helped with a kids fishing tournament supplying new rods and reels for the kids. Will always remember one troubled youth who caught his first fish a snook. Malcolm`s eyes so wide, kid could not talk, so excited! Tackle shops donated too! What a day for these troubled youth, halfway house of abused kids, bet they will never forget that fishing tournament!

That is so awesome of you to do for the kids. I was also going to suggest getting in touch with the school and see if they would have an official fishing class or club, and to contact the sponsors such as the rod and reel manufacturers. maybe the boy scouts and girl scouts organizations can tell you how to have fund raisers for this also. Best of luck with this.

Do you have mom and pop tackle shops there?
Maybe they would let you set up a donation box.
Try thrift stores, see if they will hold fishing equipment for you to give you the first shot at them.

Check and find out if your city/town has revenue sharing from the state or federal government. “We” were able to receive one time funding for a youth softball 🥎 league... The fishing club must be open to both boys and girls to be able to receive the grant. You must be able to have rules, regulations, and a mission statement/creed... Talk with your local political representatives and explain what you are attempting to accomplish... Contact BASSMASTERS, FLW and MLF they may be able to assist you in your pursuit.. I wish you all the best, good luck..,

For all of the kids, I would start them on cane poles, bobbers, light line, medium size corks and worms for bait. The main thing to introduce kids to fishing is.....catching. Once the kids are "hooked", teach them what they are capable of comprehending and try to make sure they are successful. God Bless You and good luck.
