Getting bait to the bottom

How do I get a bait to the bottom with a baitcaster? With a spinning reel I can just cast it and see until the line goes slack and then close the bail.

But with a baitcaster I thumb it so I don’t get backlashes and the bait goes as far as I thumb it even when the bail (button) is open. It doesn’t freely spool off.

Sorry if that seemed confusing but basically my question is how do I get a bait to the bottom with a baitcaster? Thank you

I usually pull some line out manually, once its hit the water, let it sink until I'm pretty sure it's hit bottom then reel in the slack

Unless there are a ton of weeds, the bait should sort of "swing" down until it touches the bottom.

Some people pull line out manually, when I throw, and stop it with my thumb when it hits the water. I release my thumb, and pull my rod stick up, it’ll pull some line out.

For me it is the same with spinning reels and baitcasters.

It just think it lets the bait / lure free fall as straight down as fast as possible.

Pull a few turns off the reel and let it slide.

I don't know what kind of fishing you are doing. Could adding a little more weight help?

This falling bait is a bit complicated. When I use my bait caster I lift the rod up when the bait hits the water, that gives me enough line for the bait to reach the bottom. As for the speed of the fall, it depends on what you are want to have the bait do. Slow is good unless you are fishing areas full of small bluegills that eat your bait before it reaches it's intended spot.

What goes up must come down you will know when it hits bottom the line will lay on top of the water.
