Were regulations a roadblock for other newbies?

I have fished once in my life and it was when I was a young kid.

I've been really interested in getting into freshwater fishing for a while now. I've just recently gotten to the part of planning an actual trip though and can't seem to understand how to navigate all the regulations.

Most recently I was hoping to fish in Big Sur, but there seems to be no fishing allowed. I was then considering Angeles National Forrest and that is catch and release only. Any tips on how to navigate this for a successful first trip?

TL;DR How do I manage to plan a first trip with all these regulations? Was this difficult for anyone else?

well if it’s catch and release only don’t keep any fish. make sure you have a valid license. don’t target anything you’re not allowed to target with your license.

Thing is I want to go through the whole process from catch to eating. At this point I'm not looking to catch and release.

That might change down the road but I haven't fished enough to do it just for the sake of catching.

then you’ll have to go somewhere where keeping is permitted and only take a species you’re allowed to keep. make sure it’s regulation keeping size and you’re all good.

Yes, this keeps a lot of people from starting. At least the ones who know there are regulations at all. It’s very intimidating.

I have twice caught myself in “no fishing” areas because I didn’t know the rules for that particular body of water. I travel for work and drive thousands of kilometres around NW Ontario every month and always have a rod and reel with me, stopping often to fish.

The regulations are plainly laid out but the shear number of exemptions means you have to do your homework before casting. I now carry a hard copy of the regs, another copy on my phone, and I download the entirety of northern Ontario on my navionic app so I’ll know the name of the lake I’m at so I can look for exemptions.

Welcome to the Forum, AM. The newbies are not the only ones confused, not only is fishing a good physical activity but also it is good mental activity. But keep in mind that there no excuse for not knowing the law. The best place to become aware of the regs. is to check the DNR website of the area that you plan to fish. If you would go to the top of this page and click on your profile and tell us where are located I'm sure some of the locals of that area would help you out.

You have permission to take a few of Gods fish out of His waters that He created, so that you may feed yourself. The Founders also covered this when they mentioned Life, Liberty and the pursuit of happiness. In this case, Life. You do not need permission (permit) from The Crown, nor should you pay a fee for a license for non-commercial (commerce) fishing. I’ll catch and cook one or two catfish, bluegill, or whatever else i’m blessed enough to harvest in order to feed myself that day., and I’ll thank God for it. Just as the Native Americans and others have done for millennia.
“ NO STATE SHALL CONVERT A LIBERTY INTO A LICENSE AND CHARGE A FEE THEREFORE.” - (Murdock vs. Pennsylvania 319 us 105)

“ IF THE STATE CONVERTS A LIBERTY (RIGHT) INTO A PRIVILEGE, THE CITIZEN CAN IGNORE THE LICENSE AND FEE, AND ENGAGE IN THE RIGHT (LIBERTY) WITH IMPUNITY.) - (Shuttlesworth vs. the city of Birmingham, Alabama 373 us 262)

Welcome to the Forum, Frankie. I'm sorry, you confused me, but that is not a hard thing to do.

I have fished for over 50 years in California and even some of the Fish And Wildlife officers have trouble with the regulations. Go to a state Fish and Wildlife office and get the answers directly from them. Be prepared for some of the staff to bring in someone else to answer your questions as they are not even up to date on many areas and the regulations that change from year to year!!!

It varies . Connecticut actually publishes a pretty clear guide. It starts with State wide regulations based on species. It also lists nearly every publicly accessible river, lake and pond and if there are any exceptions it lists that. It also gives you accessibility information. A lot of the shoreline property on CT lakes is privately owned. It will list public property and boat access sites. The shoreline may be private but the water is not. It also details consumption advisories based on pollutants. For the most part you can only eat a couple of meals a month of fresh water fish so the guides are useful for that part of the puzzle.

Since you are in California (Big Sur) it really depends on where you're going to fish (there are places that you are not allowed to fish at all) and what you're going to fish for. Most of the rules and regs are pretty clear, and if you get a copy of the fishing regs from the place where you get your license (they're free) they are generally pretty clear. If you are fishing in a lake or reservoir where fishing is legal at all, then they are for the most part open to catching any species year round. Trout fishing in rivers and streams is an entirely different story, but the closures and time of year are again pretty clearly laid out in the regulations. Also salmon and steelhead have seasons. It's not that difficult. Just get a copy, figure out what and where you want to fish, and look it up.

I grew up fishing in California, trout, catfish, striped bass. The best way I found to deal with all the rules and regulations...I moved to Alabama.
