20lb braid snapping on 40lb leader

Fairly new to fishing

I have 20lb braid spooled on my reel, bought some new mono leader today, 40lb, haven’t gone that heavy before.

Tied an FG knot to connect them, I pull it right (while it’s just on the reel, no rod attached) to see if it is a good knot, and it snaps.

It snaps well before the FG knot, on the braid.

Is it possible that the leader is too heavy? Or is the braid weathered perhaps?

The braid is 6 months old, high quality shimano brand. I regularly clean my rod and reel after every time I go fishing.

You shouldnt be able to snap 20 pound braid by pulling on it with your hands.

I agree completely with the last comment you must have some faulty braid. I would replace it

I generally do 30 lb braid to 20lb fluoro leader for abrasion resistance and presentation purposes. 20lb. braid to 40lb. mono is very small to a very large diameter difference.

Also, relying on the FG knot is like expecting to start a long lasting relationship at a country dance hall in the first night of deer season. Uni-Uni is more reliable.

Never had any problems with the FG knot. Used it for everything from snook under docks at night to surfcasting for whiting and pompano to slugging it out with triple digit tarpon and sharks. Hasn't failed me yet.

I surf fish with 40 lb braid & 50lb mono leader connected with barrel swivel tied with enhanced clinch knots. No direct line to line knots, never a problem.

Run off maybe 10 yards braid and try again. If it continues to break, your reel has been in something powerful. Inspect the reel closely too. Sounds like you got into some chemicals somewhere.

Exactly take 10 or 15 yards off more if you can then try and brake it if it brakes replace the line

Leader is not to heavy , sometimes braid is faulty . Twenty pound braid generally breaks well beyond its advertised break strength . So if knot is NOT breaking , retest braid !
Pull off several yards re tie if it happens again sounds like maybe bad braid ! If what your saying is accurate ! Also you may try the uni knot to get a reading on braid strength , if it. breaks with uni on braid then bad braid

Folks, I’m unfamiliar with the term FG knot. Can one of you explain? Perhaps it’s an abbreviation?
Thx.

I usually discard 2-3 feet of braid if fishing in rocky areas or if I have fished in brush or downed trees. Braid is tough , but can get nicks and loose strength. I always use Power Pro and it holds up great, but I do always check the first couple of feet of line.

Your braid is definitely not up to par, because there is NO WAY you should be able to break the braid without it cutting you like a knife. I’ve seen 25 lb braid saw through an anchor chain and not break....replace your braid, you probably just got a bad spool... Daiwa is pretty honorable, I would contact them with your predicament, they probably will reward you with a new spool....

Braid suffers abrasion is my guess, I use 20lb braid and pretty reliable for most part guess depends on structure being, salt water fishing with braid and dealing with sand, shell, barnacles is a challenge but stripping off 20 feet might help since you can spoil more on, fished salt water before concept of braid, now fish strictly fresh water in Wisconsin and Michigan only get to Florida once every couple of years but do enjoy saltwater fishing, good luck!!!
