You never stop sucking at fishing. I've been fishing for over 60 years and still get skunked about a quarter of the time. Some of is due to weather conditions, moon phase, or whatever, Maybe some days I just don't hold my mouth richt. Who knows.
On the other hand, I've had some spectacular days. One day I caught five bass, all over five pounds. Another I'ev caught 10 Sauger, all over 19 inches. And another day I caught four blue catfish, two twenty pounders, one 37 and one 81. Can't beat a day like that!\\
Just don't be so down on yourself. i's like life - 90 percent is sheer bordom 8 percent is pure terror and 2 percent is total elation. That's life.

Can you define "good?" Sometimes one is good, sometimes 12 is good.

I fish a lot in the local ponds. Lots of people fish them too. Persistence seems to be my most successful lure.
I fish from shore. Can't use a boat on the ponds...too small for that. I start out fishing for bass using a plastic worm. No luck? switch to Rapala or some other lure like it. No luck? switch to a surface noise lure. No luck? Go to Walmart and get a box of night crawlers. Put a bare hook on a line. Thread on a half of a crawler. Cast out and wait. Sooner or later something will pick it up. Usually a blue gill. Don't use large hooks. A size 6 long shank is my preferred hook. If you have a spare rod. Do the same thing but put a bobber about 4 feet above the hook. Throw out and wait. I have days when I can't keep up with both rods and have to choose between bottom and top fishing. Occasionally the bottom rig will pick up a bass or catfish. I also have days when I am happy with catching only one blue gill. They don't bite like they are starved every day. You get good days and bad. But, you really remember those good days and it makes you want to come back for the possibility of having another one like it. Just go often and enjoy the outdoors. God made fishing as a means for us to relax. It isn't all in the catching. Soak in some of the beauty of being outside. This weeks catch in pictures. Notice top water lure...Black Jitter bug. The 3 inch one. I caught others too but these were the biggest. It has been a fun week. The week before stunk. Just kept at it and reaped the rewards. The eel is the Common American Eel. Never caught an eel before and have been fishing for over 50 years. YUCK! Had one day that I caught 36 large blue gills and 3 small bass on those night crawlers. Lots of fun.

Work on one technique. 90% of what you see or hear in the sporting good stores is nothing but B.S. Don't be spending all your time or dollars on worthless things that are made to catch your eye and not fish. Find someone that fishes rubber baits with a great deal of success. Watch and learn. Rubber baits will attract anything that swims in fresh or salt water and wont break your budget. One year I caught over 8000 fish of many different species all on rubber baits. Look, listen and learn.

Hi, teckguyhotel. This is Scorchy, first I am 65 yrs. old and have fished all my life! I had very good and patient teachers, my mom and dad. I had no choice but to go when they did. And we did not have a lot of money for other things so we went often. So you need to go with someone or when you are out watch others. Now in the past 50 yrs. I have been a Guide, tournament fisherman and to this very day I get skunked from time to time. I have no idea where you are fishing at but this time of year I stop, enjoy the holidays. I repair my gear if needed, sort out the tackle, read a ton both on-line and in things called books (older folks remember those). Come mid feb. here in No. California i go for the big bass and I am happy to get 1 to 5 bites a day. Fish the senko's just like the other post, jigs with trailers white and dark colors all on structure. Have a white double willow leaf white skirt 3/8oz. spinnerbait and at a mid reel pace. Know you will get that bite don't think you will. It will all come together. Most people will tell you they sucked as I did at first using a hammer and nail but bend a ton and smack your thumb a few and you get pretty good at it.

I don't think I've ever been good but I've been lucky quite a few times. I've fished from the bank & caught bass on worms when I was after catfish. About the only thing I've been consistent with is bluegill. I can sometimes catch them when I'm fishing for bluegill. My most consistent catch has been a "mixed bag". Sometimes something just clicks & I have a wonderful smallmouth day or I bring home a fine mess of crappie. No, those aren't my happiest fishing days. I love every one of them. If I never get to wet another hook I can honestly say I've had a wonderful time, it couldn't have been any better. That's just my opinion.

OH NO not golf. If you go to golfing you’ll be lost forever. There’s no coming back from that.

The trick is not to care what you land. Sure they love bass and walleye but they are just as thrilled with bluegill and catfish ( and love carp). They will throw a top bobber or a bottom line to sit and then lure on a second line. They catch like crazy in ways that make no sense ( my son caught a 7lb bass on a worm on the bottom 8 ft from shore in a bunch of algae ).

They just love fishing and any fish makes them happy. When I follow their approach I'm much happier too. Any fish is a good fish.

I agree, I was fishing with my 14 year old son once and he put a grape from a can of mixed fruit on his hook. I said your not going to catch anything with that. About 30 seconds later he reels in a a 18 inch redfish. I’m thinking what in the world just happened. Just goes to show you never really know what will work until you try it.

I wouldn't worry too much ! Golf can be more annoying and frustrating than fishing could ever be ! (Ask me, I'll tell you !) If that person struggles as much with golf as he did fishing, he'll be back wishing he'd never picked up a club ! Best thing he could do to calm his nerves from golfing is to carry a rod in his golf bag and fish the water hazards every chance he gets !

As you can tell by the above responses, we have all gone through slow times in our fishing careers so don't give up. Perhaps you need to switch to a different water body. Try one trip with an experienced guide. Don't spend a lot of money on new gear, that's not necessary. If you need some education, try one of my books at www.booksbyjake.com.
