Before you spend any money on your trolling motor, check out you battery and see if you can lift it and carry it an appropriate distance. Depending on what you get, they can be very heavy. Keep in mind, you’ll be removing it regularly to recharge unless you have nearby electricity. Possibility to connect a small solar panel. Usually lots of sun when fishing.

If you put a motor on do you have to register the boat and maybe the motor?

Fire extinguisher and air horn?

Check with your state’s water craft laws. Depends on length and horsepower for most states

Not in Cal. If you even use an electric trolling motor on a kayak you have to register it with the state and get cf#s. Really sucks. saw1

Some places require no combustion engines at all. Got both and a big wide john boat with a large fold down top to shade the dogs. Oh the trailer thing, just fixed second axle on 30 year old aluminum trailer. This antique john boat has boated king fish and sail fish too. Crazy fishing fever offshore too!

Re: Oz's questions...in Oregon, ANY motor, electric, gas, whatever, requires registration. Even my little 5' Hobie "lawn chair on two pontoons", that I built a frame for to give me a transom and foot rest and outfitted w/ an ancient 12lb Eska trolling motor ! Gotta be the most $$$$-grubbing revenue-grab on boaters ever, anywhere. Even those with Intex Mariner and Sevylor inflatables that have a motor mount must be registered, as well as pay a "Clean Boat fee".. (a fee that funds "Inspection Stations" that "check" for invasive species, currently $12, I believe) that now extends to rafts and kayaks, as well ! Anything to generate $$$$ and justify their bureaucracy, I guess.
Sorry for the rant, it's just so never-ending and getting to be costly to enjoy my boats.... I now have four required to be registered (two of which only hold me !) and have clean boat tags every two years, plus two more river kayaks required to have clean boat tags, yearly......this sucks. Hope your State is not so regulatory and greedy.... better check !

In ks if it has a motor it has to be registered as far as I know, anything that uses paddles for propulsion does not.

Wouldn't be the first time I was wrong, just the last I knew of the regulations.

Sail boats I just looked.

I suppose that is due to most of them having small outboards?

PS-- registration comes with all the usual boating requirements such as, yes, a fire extinguisher, throw cushion, air horn or similar, lights ... even though I am using an electric motor exclusively ! Fire ?!?!? And where do I stash all that on my "lawn chair" boat, or even my Sea Eagle 285fpb (motorized and registered) ??? Aaaaaa !

The tag office gave me a break this year? Old holey john boat got a antique sticker this year. Did not even know boats could get antique stickers. Sticker Shock! Had to ask twice, it was a lot less!

A 50 Lb trust Mini Kota should work just fine for a boat like that and in a river with current and tide. When I was a kid my first boat was a 17 foot bass tracker with a 40 horse motor and a 55 pound trust Mini Kota and it did just about every thing I needed in the current on the Calif Delta.

I’m a solar nut and a fisherman. YES electric trolling motors are great. Another cool thing is to spend a hundred or so bucks on a 100 watt solar panel to keep batteries charged. You can camp and not need power outlet. Every few hours of sun on the panel would give you probably 20 minutes of propulsion the next day. I use a solar panel ( 80 watt 12v) on my trolling motor battery. If it’s hooked up while In boat it is charging. I also sleep on a CPAP with battery when hunting..fishing...at my ranch place... and use 80 watt panel to keep battery full. At home I have 19kw of panels on my roof.

Just remember when you put a motor on your boat it needs to be registered to be legal.
